How To Hit The Gym At 5 AM

and learn to love it…

5 AM is early.

Trust me, when I wake up and it’s still dark out and the bed feels the warmest and most comfiest it has felt all night, the last thing I want to do is put on workout clothes and hit the gym.

I do genuinely feel that the bed gets more comfortable as the time gets closer to your alarm ringing. However, what I have begun doing to kick my butt out of that warm bed, is think about my day. Will I feel like working out later in the day? That will mean interrupting whatever it is I'm doing in the day time. Especially if you’ve got a 9–5 job. To come home from a long day of work, you’re tired, you’re hungry, you’re in no mood to do anything, all you want is to cuddle up on the couch, remote in hand and food in the other. So you tell yourself you’ll relax for an hour at most, but that hour turns into three, and by then it’s too late to do or go anywhere.

There are plenty of people out there who love working out later in the day, but I am writing to those who have a hard time making it to the gym. The people who wish they were morning people and would love if they could just wake up, get the gym out of the way, shower, and be ready for the day. It can happen, trust me, and when it does it’ll become a habit, you’ll be more consistent, you’ll be teaching yourself discipline which is something people lack nowadays.

If the fact that working out in the morning will be better for you, in general, doesn’t convince you enough, let’s talk about the health benefits of it.

Morning workouts boost your metabolism

Your body burns more calories, post-workout. Simply put, your body is expending energy in order to return back to its normal resting state. This is called the afterburner effect.

You WILL become much more consistent in your training

The chances of you skipping a workout later in the day, are pretty high. Regular daily life can get in the way, and before you know it you’re agreeing to go out for drinks with your coworkers or you have so many errands you need to run that your workout gets pushed to the bottom of your to-do list, in turn, making it the least of your priorities. Making your training a morning habit will aid in you reaching your physical goals much faster, and if you don’t necessarily have any set physical goals, think of it as maintaining your health and maybe set some goals.

Say goodbye to coffee and hello endorphins

When we exercise, our bodies produce a chemical called endorphins. Endorphins trigger positive feelings in our bodies. They also reduce stress, anxiety, and boost self-esteem. There have been so many times that I have been on such a high post-workout that I didn’t even trouble myself with making coffee, the endorphins were indeed enough. Best of all, you will feel awake and your mind will be sharp.

How can I do this?

Now I’ve told you all the benefits, you’re ready to start tomorrow! And I know you will, but for those mornings that it gets a little rough, here are a few tips to keep you going.

Force Yourself To Get Out Of Bed

Set multiple alarms if you are a snoozer. Put your alarm somewhere far so you’d be forced to get out of bed in order to turn it off.

Set up a morning routine and gym program

A morning routine can consist of lemon water, maybe some coffee to jumpstart your workout, or even pre-workout if you like that more, have your gym clothes laid out the night before, and most importantly, have a gym program ready. There’s nothing worse than waking up, going to the gym and not knowing what you’ll be doing that day.

Think positive. Make it enjoyable

Don’t wake up thinking, “Ugh I don’t want to do this.” Bypass those feelings immediately. Do it as if it is your job. When you give yourself no other option, it becomes so routine that you don’t even have the time to complain about it. Think about all of the benefits of doing this, think about how your afternoon and evening will be completely free because you checked this off your to-do list. And also, do something you’ll enjoy. If you hate cardio but love weight training, set up a schedule where you focus on that and cardio is at the end, watch some Netflix during that brutal cardio session. Make it enjoyable!


I can’t stress this enough but wake your body up gently. Be kind to it in the morning, think of it as you would a sleeping child. Your body needs a gentle approach when it comes to working out, start off easy. Warm-up, stretch, breathe, relax. Then kick ass.
