when your mind is racing and all you want to do… is cry
Tonight is date night
I’m excited for it. I’ve BEEN excited for it, I look forward to our Fridays particularly for this very reason. Date night.
We all have busy lives, we all have different schedules and things get off track and life just gets incredibly hectic. The one thing that I feel should always stay a constant is your quality time with your significant other and in that time, you also always allow yourself to completely, unwind.
To me, unwinding is unfamiliar territory. I am not a relaxed individual, I’m often referred to as always being tense, and if you ask me to relax I will most likely say “I am,” when I’m stressed over a million and ten things. It’s just how I am. I took a yoga class once, and the instructor told me to relax and I told her I was and she said my body was too tense and she could ‘see’ the tension. Needless to say, I didn’t go back. I don’t KNOW how to relax sometimes, I get so caught up in my head that I just end up being stuck there. The day goes by and I feel like a trainwreck at the end of the night, stressed about this and that and worried about tomorrow already.
I like to think I’m a realist because I think ahead so often, however, I think so far ahead that I also make up all the possible negative outcomes of every situation. For instance, tomorrow I have a dermatologist appointment which has been scheduled for a few weeks now, I’ve been looking forward to it, however, I guarantee you I’ve already thought of over 11 negative outcomes of it. Why? Who knows. I’m a planner, and I like to plan and hope for the best, but I also plan for the worst.
This is why I look forward to Fridays. Fridays are the days I schedule my ‘unwinding’ time. I get all dressed up, curl my hair, take my clothes off and put something else on because I can’t make a decision on what to wear, then I put on lipstick in his favorite shade, I spray perfume and I check the clock. It is time to unwind. Unplug from everything for three to four hours. I won’t think of anything negative. I won’t think about my dermatologist appointment or the possible scenarios that I create in my head, I won’t think about work the following week and if I’ll meet my deadlines, all I will think about is our time together. The cocktail in my hand, the man across the table from me.
I believe that there are many women out there that are like me. They struggle to relax, struggle to find that balance. Sometimes that balance is in a date night, sometimes it’s in some self-care, or perhaps cooking a nice dinner for yourself and enjoying a glass of wine, or a bottle, no judgment. This is a very safe space, and sometimes bottles are necessary! My point is, figure it out.
Unwinding is essential to our health. It’s essential to our well-being and frankly, to the well-being of others, I don’t know about you but if I don’t get my fix, I’m not the most pleasant gal to be around. You NEED that time that allows you to feel free in your own head. Without any thoughts coming and hitting you in every which way. You NEED that time with your significant other. You NEED that time with yourself.
So, cut a few hours out of your busy schedule on a Friday night, or a Saturday, whichever is best. Then, grab a friend, a significant other, or just your lovely self and do what you enjoy. Clear your mind, be in the present moment and simply unwind.
