this is how you change it
Happiness depends on your mindset and attitude. — Roy T.Bennett
There was a research study by Barbara Fredrickson that shows that those who nurture a positive mentality have a frame of mind that allows them to explore different options and create new opportunities. Opportunities that your negative mindset would otherwise have restricted you from.
Fredrickson tested the impact of positive emotions on the brain by setting up an experiment. During this experiment, she ended up divided her research subjects into 5 groups and showed each group different film clips.
The first two groups were shown clips that created positive emotions. Group 1 saw images that created feelings of joy and group 2 saw images that created feelings of contentment.
Group 3 was a control group. They were looking at images that were neutral and produced no emotion.
The last two groups were shown clips that created negative emotions. Group 4 saw images that created feelings of fear. Group 5 saw images that created feelings of anger.
Afterward, each participant was asked to imagine themselves in a situation where similar feelings would arise and to write down what they would do. Each participant was handed a piece of paper with 20 blank lines that started with the phrase, “I would like to…”
Participants who saw images of fear and anger wrote down the fewest responses. Meanwhile, the participants who saw images of joy and contentment, wrote down a significantly higher number of actions that they would take, even when compared to the neutral group.
In other words, when you are experiencing positive emotions like happiness, joy, etc you will then see more possibilities in your life. These findings were some of the first that suggested positive emotions broaden your sense of possibility and open your mind up to more opportunities.
You see, something that holds people back from unleashing their fullest potential is their mindset.
A negative mindset will get you absolutely nowhere.
Think of it this way: Your mentality is the foundation of your life. It is the foundation of your business.
I used to be one of the most negative humans on the planet. I was the epitome of a negative nancy. I was always a glass-half-empty rather than a glass-half-full type of gal. I liked to call it realism, but really I was just a pessimist.
I would judge my writing before even jotting a thought down.
I would complain about my weight before even stepping on a scale, or looking in the mirror.
I would make the decision that my day would be terrible because of the weather being poor or simply because “I had a feeling.”
My constant negative emotions caused me to program my mind to behave in a similar way every single morning.
I slowly began to expect to have a bad day. I would expect to feel overweight or unfit.
When you allow negative emotions to control your mind you begin to narrow your perspective and way of thinking. You believe that there is nothing better out there for you, or that you’re not good enough for more. You get stuck in this ball of negativity and feeling of inferiority. Simultaneously you begin to attract even more negative situations.
Negativity attracts negativity.
Why you need to make a change
If you’ve experienced negative thinking for a long time, this might be a difficult change for you to make. However, I truly believe that if you want to make a change, you can do so. YOU are in control of YOU. Not your negative thoughts.
“Your beliefs become your thoughts, and through the process of manifestation, they are then created and implemented into your life. — Gandhi
Positive thinking will broaden your horizons, opening you to more opportunities, more success, and significant self-improvement.
Positive thinking will also allow you to be strong, and discipline you to take on new challenges, experience more growth, and allow you to pursue your dreams despite being fearful.
Allowing this sort of thinking into your life will not only benefit you mentally, but it will allow you to discover your highest potential.
“Discipline your mind to think positively, to see the good in every situation and look at the best side of every event.”
Start with Affirmations
Start small. I’m not going to tell you that by thinking a few positive thoughts your life will immediately become better and you’ll never have a single negative thought enter your mind ever again. I wish it were that simple!
When you wake up in the morning, instead of allowing negative thoughts to flood your mind about how the day might go wrong, or how you’re out of coffee, or how there’s going to be traffic, or how you looked puffy in the morning — you get my point — flip the switch and instead think the complete opposite. SAY the complete opposite.
Today is going to be a great day.
I look good. Say, do I look a bit younger today?
I’m out of coffee, guess I will treat myself to Starbucks today!
I can listen to a podcast or audible during my drive today, it’ll make the traffic seem like nothing!
Learn to embrace the suck by reinforcing positivity over your life. When you begin behaving this way, YOU will be in charge of your thoughts, and YOU will be the one holding the power.
Start surrounding yourself with the GOOD
You are the company that you keep, my friends. That rings true for not only people but energy as well.
If you constantly listen to depressing music, the chances of you being a bit on the sad side? A bit high.
If you always hang around people who don’t have any goals and ambitions, the chances of you becoming successful are significantly lowered.
When you’re around people who are content with their mediocre life, you begin to get comfortable. You stop seeing the big picture, you stop setting goals for yourself because you look at your friends and think, “oh well, Martha seems happy working her minimum wage job so I guess I will be too!”
Martha doesn’t know any better! Don’t allow yourself to sink to other peoples levels. Be better.
Surround yourself with successful people who can invest into you, who can show you that there is more to life.
Read books, obtain an obscene amount of knowledge.
Listen to podcasts that will inspire you.
Create a plan
Create a plan.
Have a schedule, have a kill-list. Have a goals list. A 1 year plan. A 5 year plan. A 10 year plan. Honestly, I have a daily plan, a weekly plan, and a monthly plan. Do what works best for you!
What creates that fire within you? What is that 1 thing you could stay up all night for reading and learning about?
What is that ONE thing that makes you excited to get out of bed for?
Find it, and start doing it. Imagine the level of success, imagine the productivity levels you will reach when you find what you are truly passionate about, and unleash your fullest potential on it?
You want to be a writer?
Wake up every single morning and tell yourself you’re going to be a NYT best-selling author.
You want to be healthy?
Wake up with a plan of what you can do to make healthier choices throughout the day, also get a workout in!
You want to start a business?
Do it. Research what you want to do. Learn about what you want to do. Tell yourself how you will get there and what you will do in order to get there.
Set goals for yourself, accomplish those goals.
Be the change that you want to see in the world. Be the optimistic person who sees the good and understands the value of positive thinking. Your words have power. Be a glass-half-full type of person.
Your thoughts have power. Your habits have power. Go and unleash your fullest potential.
