Have you ever asked yourself the following question:
“What do I want to do today?”
Or… do you constantly catch yourself asking this question:
“What do I need to do today?”
If you were to ask me, I would tell you that I am definitely with #2.
Sometimes, we are so busy with life and so consumed with going, going and going that we often forget what it is that matters to us and what it is that makes us happy. Every single day, I map out my agenda. I wake up at the same time throughout the week, I have my workout routine that is written out by my personal trainer, I know what I’m having for breakfast, I have an idea of what I will be wearing, I know which days I will be out of the house, which days I will be staying in, I know what groceries I need to buy and what needs to be cleaned, I know the ins and outs of what needs to be done in the day. It’s simple. I’m a planner. I seldom start a day without a plan.
However, this morning I woke up, completed my morning routine, began thinking about what needs to be done… “laundry, vacuum, mop the living room again, maybe re-organize that tea cabinet it looked a little out of order, oh I should probably go get a loaf of fresh bread at the farmers market… etc.” Then I stopped and thought to myself,
“I want to go read a book.”
I know, it sounds lame. I used to read a lot as a kid. If I were to ever get grounded, my mom would take away my books, not the TV. There’s a blissful pleasure in reading for me. It takes me out of the world. It brings forth a peacefulness that I don’t often experience because I am constantly thinking, constantly doing, constantly worrying. Worrying gets us nowhere, it messes with our mental health, our body lashes out from the stress, and in the end, nobody is happy. Which is why I strive to do things that relax me and bring me peace on a daily basis. Reading is something I genuinely do for pleasure. And we as humans often are on the go so much that we forget what it is that truly matters to us, what makes us happy, what brings us peace.
I’m not talking about the kind of happy you feel after you get that promotion you were hoping for or the happy you get after you buy a new car. I’m talking about the type of happy you feel when you do something that you genuinely love. I’m talking about the little things.
Taking a walk by the beach because the ocean is your favorite sound
Watching the sunset because that is your absolute favorite color and you only see it when the sky is just right
Drinking a glass of red wine with your significant other on the balcony at night and talking about life
Reading a book at a cafe on a Saturday morning (me today)
Yoga, good for the body AND the mind
Find your bliss. And the next time you think about all the things that need to get done that day, stop and think:
“What do I want to do today?”
It doesn’t need to take up your entire day, I get it, we all have jobs and busy schedules. But, think about what you love and invest 20–30 minutes into it. You’ll love the outcome.
What makes YOU happy?
